The History of Orders & Decorations
Decorations and medals have a long-standing history dating back centuries. Awards from ancient times were given solely for military achievements and were mounted on the soldier’s armour or war horses during battle.
The custom of awarding medals to soldier's to honour their service, recognise acts of gallantry and commend bravery on the battle field has been handed down through the ages. From 1901, Australia issued imperial honours and awards until the Australian honours system was established by the Australian Government in 1975.The first medal appointed to the new honour system was by Queen Elizabeth II, this medals was the Order of Australia (OAM). The medal was established on 14th February 1975 and is an order of chivalry, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or meritorious service.
