The General Service Medal 1962 was instituted in 1964 to supersede both the Naval General Service Medal 1915 and the General Service Medal 1918 (Army and RAF). The medal is issued with clasps which define the service for which the award is made

The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-75 was approved in 1997. It may be awarded for service in, or in connection with prescribed warlike operations from 3 September 1945 until 13 February 1975.

The Australian Active Service Medal was introduced in 1988 to recognise service in prescribed warlike operations since 14 February 1975.

In November 2008, the Australian Government formally accepted an offer from the then-President of Timor-Leste for Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel to accept and wear the Timor-Leste Solidarity Medal (TLSM). The medal was established to recognise those men and women who provided service in stability and peace operations in Timor-Leste from 1 May 2006.

To qualify for a Defence Force Service Medal, a member is required to complete 15 years of efficient remunerated service prior to 20 April 1999 and must have been serving on or after 14 February 1975.

The Australian Defence Medal recognises Australian Defence Force personnel who have efficiently completed either:

an initial enlistment period, or
four years service,
whichever is the lesser, and all of the relevant service was after 3 September 1945.

Included are former Defence Force members who did not complete the qualifying period because they:

died in service,
were medically discharged (based upon individual circumstances), or
left the service due to a Defence workplace policy of the tim

The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal was issued by the Government of the Republic of Vietnam for service in the prescribed area of operations in Vietnam during the period commencing on 31 July 1962 and ending on 28 March 1973 for Australian personnel.

The Vietnam Medal was instituted in 1968 and awarded for service in Vietnam between 29 May 1964 and 27 January 1973. Service from 24 December 1962 until 29 May 1964 was recognised by the General Service Medal 1962 with clasp SOUTH VIETNAM.
